Dieticians recommend Calcium while on weight loss. However, lately, we are hearing that too much of Calcium in the body is not good. What’s your take on this?
We are aware that we need calcium for our bone health. About 1000-1200 mg of calcium per day from real food sources is recommended for a healthy weight loss apart from strong bones. Calcium stored in fat cells burn fat more effectively aiding in fat loss. Also, inclusion of calcium daily is believed to reduce the cravings for carbohydrates by reducing the brain signal called NPY (Neuro Peptide Y) which is the trigger of sweet and starch cravings. Calcium rich foods include – low fat milk and curd, unsalted cheese, paneer, green leafy vegetables, other vegetables such as broccoli, mushroom, bean fruits especially orange, figs and dry fruits, nuts and seeds, oats, ragi and so on.
However, care should be taken to not overeat calcium. Ingesting more than 1800-2000mg of calcium per day can result in prostate cancer or kidney stones. If you include calcium only through dairy, it can result in high calories and one may also not see effective weight loss. Therefore, a dietician, always recommends using a variety of calcium sources to ensure and maintain calorie balance.
Important Tip: For calcium to deliver its best, Vitamin D is essential in our body. Also, expose oneself to sunlight as often as possible.

How do we eat right upon waking?
The first 60 minutes of our day is an `opportunity’. What we choose to eat at this hour will make a huge impact in solving most of the short-term health complications and prevent one from long term illness. One should replace tea or coffee with two glasses of warm water to begin with. The best is to eat a portion of fruits such as apple, papaya, melons, banana and so on. If you have your breakfast early, ensure you eat it within the 60 minutes after waking and let the breakfast contain complex carbohydrates such as a combination of whole cereals and fruits. This helps in warding off a lot of complication and help one feel much better through the day.
Important Tip: Make use of the golden opportunity everyday – The First 60 Minutes!
